Kenley Hotel Campaign: Six-Week Progress Update

Posted on August 5, 2026August 5, 2026 by pk

The #SaveTheKenleyHotel campaign has made significant progress over the past six
weeks, thanks to the continued support of residents, donors and partners. Below is a
concise update on the key steps taken to secure a sustainable future for The Kenley Hotel.

KENDRA has formally joined the Plunkett Foundation, giving us access to specialist
advisers, governance support and the national network behind more than 150 successful
community-owned pubs. This membership strengthens our credibility with funders, partners
and pub companies as we move toward forming a Community Benefit Society (CBS).

We have also submitted The Kenley Hotel to Historic England for heritage consideration.
The building’s RAF history, architectural character and long-standing role in Kenley’s social
life make it a strong candidate for recognition. This submission reinforces the case that The
Kenley Hotel is a heritage asset worth protecting.

Two major grant applications have been filed: the Coop Community Fund and the National
Lottery Community Fund. If successful, these grants will support CBS formation, business
planning and community engagement.

Paul Keating & Fareita Udoh met with Croydon Council at the end of July. A formal letter has
been sent to Star Pubs by Cllr Ola Kolade, supported by KENDRA and Cllr Gayle Gander,
requesting a meeting to discuss the community pub proposal. The letter highlights the
building’s importance, strong community backing and the benefits of working collaboratively
to secure its future.

We have also engaged several local employers and service providers — including FM
Conway, Day Aggregates, Secom PLC, SES Water, UK Power Networks, National Grid,
Dunelm, Tesco and Screwfix — to explore partnership opportunities and practical support.
We have also attended 3 local events The Hayes Fair, Harris Primary School Carnival and
Tesco Community Champions Table to raise awareness and support.

Offline pledges now total £2,250, demonstrating strong local commitment. To progress
further, we must reach £10,000 to fund the building valuation, business plan modelling, CBS
legal setup and essential compliance costs.

The Kenley Hotel is a heritage landmark and part of our community’s story. With continued
support, we can bring it back to life as a thriving, community-run pub.
