Kenley Airfield Heritage Day 16th August

Posted on July 20, 2015July 23, 2015 by admin

Sunday 16th August – 12 noon to 4pm

Battle_britain_poster1A free event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, featuring a full display by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. The Portcullis Club will be open for refreshments, including their popular 1940’s cakes and savouries,  and there will be a number of exhibition stands outside.

This is a hugely significant anniversary in the history of Kenley Airfield. It was at the heart of the Battle of Britain, a pivotal time in World War Two. Kenley Airfield Heritage Day is both a celebration and commemoration of the sacrifice and courage of the young men and women who defended Britain. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight display will be at 3:45 pm. Spectators are asked to keep to the Tribute side of the airfield, and marshals will be on hand to direct people.

FLYPAST 18th August:

There will be a flypast of 8 Spitfire and Hurricane aircraft on 18th August at 1pm to commemorate “The hardest day” during the Battle of Britain, when Kenley Airfield was attacked. As Mike Street puts in his newsletter article ‘ at 1:22 PM on that day 9 Dorniers found the target and “all hell broke loose” at RAF Kenley and the surrounding area…..smoke from the fires
could be seen 34 miles away at Brighton; but by the end of the day the
ground staff at the airfield had made it good enough for aircraft to land.‘
